Nanchang-based Hongdu Aviation Industry Corporation has introduced multi-purpose fighter L-15B which can perform air superiority, precision strike and anti-ship combat missions. Based on the L-15A advanced trainer LIFT configuration, L-15B is equipped with passive phased array radar which allows it to perform BVR air combat and accurate ground strikes.
L-15B has weapons carrying capacity of 3.5 tonnes, which is more than the Q-5-type aircraft and can be mounted with PL-9C air-to-air missiles and according to the company spokesperson, the performance of the aircraft even reached the JF-17 “Fierce Dragon” fighter level.
L-15B is equipped with two Ukrainian AL-222-25F turbofan engines with an afterburner which allows it to attain speed up to Mach 1.5. L-15B according to company exceeded all third-generation light fighters in terms of integrated flight performance (except for supersonic performance).
According to company spokespersons, aircraft will be offered to countries with smaller air force looking for combat jets who are looking for cheap fighter jets with air interception and limited Air to ground capabilities.
