Terming the final approval for buying 83 LCA Mar1A fighter jets as a significant achievement for Make in India, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Bipin Rawat said Wednesday that the main objective is to reach a stage where the country can win conflicts using homemade weapon systems.

“Our focus will remain on indigenisation and efforts to progressively support Aatmanirbhar Bharat are our mission. We hope to see our Air Force [IAF] touch the sky with glory with aircraft that has major components including engines that are Made in India,” Gen Bipin Rawat told India Today.

The CDS was reacting to the Cabinet Committee on Security’s decision to buy 83 LCA Tejas for the Indian Air Force under the Centre’s Make in India initiative. The CDS has been tasked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure indigenisation in the defence forces.

DRDO Chairman Dr G Satheesh Reddy termed the approval as “a great day for Indian aeronautical scientific community and industry”. Getting approval for the order of the largest quantity of aircraft ever is a big achievement and is the culmination of hard work of three decades, he added.

“It paves way for the development of various advanced aircraft systems in the country. I want to thank the Prime Minister for giving the approval to this important project,” DRDO chairman Dr G Satheesh Reddy went on to say.
