Dr. Girish Deodhare, Director General, ADA speaking to the Indian media has confirmed that flexibility studies of Carrier based 5th generation fighter aircraft based on AMCA design have been completed and the flexibility study report has been accepted by Indian Navy and the program is set to enter design phase by end of this year. Indian Navy in 2016, had approached ADA to develop a carrier deck version of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) and soon flexibility studies were commissioned in 2017 to see if it is viable to convert Airforce-AMCA design into Carrier based 5th generation fighter aircraft.

While ADA is tight-lipped on proposed changes which AMCA will have to go through to be converted into a Carrier based 5th generation fighter aircraft, Industrial sources close to idrw.org have said that ADA is well aware of challenges that it will face in the program and is counting on Navy Mark-2 program to provide necessary experience that it believes will act as a stepping stone towards the development of N-AMCA program. Idrw was the first to break the news that General Electric had recently briefed Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) on F-414 Enhanced Engine to power indigenous MWF (Medium Weight Fighter) and AMCA (Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft). GE is looking at a potential order for 1400+ engines in next three four decades.

GE till now has supplied ADA with Eight F414-INS6 engines which generate 98kN Class of Wet Thrust but F414 Enhanced Engine can generate 116 kN Class of Wet Thrust with 1% improved fuel burn over F414-INS6 engines with negligible weight gain. GE in 2010 had won a contract to supply 99 F414-INS6 engines with an option of 40 more as follow on order to power Mk-2 LCA-Tejas which now has become MWF with increased Maximum take-off weight of 17.5 tonnes over which GE officials feel that additional 18kn Wet Thrust will come in handy on MWF after incremental growth in its payload and weapons capabilities after redesign. F414-INS6 engines and F414 Enhanced Engine dimensions will remain the same and no airframe changes will be required was the assurance given by the GE officials to ADA. Continue reading

SAAB has quietly delivered without much fanfare three more Saab 2000 Erieye Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEW&C) in April to Pakistani Airforce, which comes after crucial dogfight episode with Indian Airforce in Pakistan occupied Kashmir and Indian Kashmir, where both sides were actively using AWACS Aircraft to monitor airspace intrusion and also guide fighter formations.

Pakistan Air force operated 4 Saab 2000 Erieye AEW&C along with one Saab 2000 in VIP configuration, One Erieye AEW&C aircraft was lost In an attack on Kamra airbase and two more were damaged but were repaired and put back into service. Down to three aircraft, PAF decided to procure 3 more Saab 2000 aircraft from former airline operators, later upgraded with Erieye radar system, which now takes the total strength of Saab 2000 Erieye AEW&C to Six. India is determined to make sure that the production of Six next-generation submarines comes with the highest indigenous content that will be a perfect road-map for the development of Project-76 the successor program which Indian Navy Bureau will be in charge of the design and development of indigenous conventional submarine post-Project-75 I.

Four contenders in the Project-75I have been recently notified that winning bidder will have to use local, DMR 249A steel plates developed by the State-run Steel Authority of India (SAIL), which will negate import of military grade steel from abroad, and also will come handy in the development of future local submarines. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has confirmed that HJT-36 Intermediate Jet Trainer (IJT) had flawless flight yesterday after been grounded for nearly three years. As per picture realized by HAL, Tail section of the HJT-36 has gone through a high level of modification which was recommended by the BAe, hired as the consultant by HAL.

The modification was based on comprehensive wind tunnel studies said HAL official. As seen in the picture above, Tail has been moved little further south and ventral fins have been added so that aircraft can be easily recovered when in spin even by a rookie trainee pilot. Continue reading

HAL has revived its intermediate jet trainer programme to help rookie IAF pilots and the first flight of heavily modified Hindustan Jet Trainer (HJT)-36 was carried out from HAL Complex in Bengaluru by Wing Commander Pratyush Awasthi (Retd) and Group Captain Subroto Chaki successfully today as per media reports.

The chronic spin problem, which had grounded the aircraft for many years now, according to HAL officials has been addressed with changes made to the air frame and after few initial flights, aircraft will be available for Spin tests in coming weeks. The intermediate jet trainer has been facing the problem with the stall and spin trials which was never resolved and aircraft was declared unfit to be flown by rookie pilots due to which Government of India and IAF had stopped further funding for the program, a few years back. HAL was suggested to fix issues with HJT-36 with internal funds of the company or scrap the programme altogether. Continue reading

Adani Defence & Aerospace which has tied up with Ilyushin Aviation Complex of Russia to offer Ilyushin Il-112 light military transport aircraft to Indian Air Force (IAF) to replace aging An-32 light military transporter after India walked away from joint venture to manufacture Il-214/MTA a 20-tonne aircraft to replace the An-32 transport aircraft in service in both the Indian and Russian air forces.

According to Ilyushin Aviation Complex, Il-112V is designed for transporting and parachuting of light weaponry and equipment, cargoes and military personnel, as well as for transporting a wide variety of cargoes when operated in commercial service. Il-112V is capable of auto landing approaches to categorized aerodromes (minimum requirement being ICAO category II) and manual landing approaches to aerodromes poorly equipped with or having no radio technical equipment. According to confirmed media reports, Nirbhay subsonic land-attack cruise missile tested today by India, was powered by Russian NPO Saturn 36MT mini turbofan engines and not by the indigenously developed Manik mini turbofan engine. The missile covered 650km in 42.3-minute fight duration and performance pre-set trajectory and maneuvered as low as five meters to a range of 2.5km during it’s entire flight regime .

This is for the first time the missile flew such low, which in military terms is called as Tree top level of flying to remain under radar coverage but it also demonstrated that it posses anti-ship capability by flying close to 10 min or nearly 150 km at such low altitude which is a record for any local weapons itself. Indian Air Force (IAF) is likely to push competing vendors in India’s air force tender for supply of 114 fighter jet to offer next-generation air to air missile if they want to be taken seriously with an option for local assembly of this missile system. According to reliable Industrial sources close to idrw.org, key decisions were taken in a recent meeting by high ranking officials of IAF and Government which will also push for integration of local Air-to-Air missile weapons systems like Astra and SFDR and local maintenance and assembly of other BVR-AAMs which will come with the weapons package.

MBDA Meteor air-to-air missile is already offered with Dassault Rafale, Euro-fighter Typhoon, and Gripen-E and is already procured by India for 36 Dassault Rafale ordered in the off shelf deal with France. European MBDA has limited the sale of Meteor BVR-AAM to only European manufactured fighter jet and has declined to integrate them with Russian manufactured Sukhoi-Su-30MKI and Indian made LCA-Tejas Mk1A fighter jets. Su-30s were the Bigfish which Pakistani Airforce wanted to kill to win a propaganda war and establish superiority myth over Indian air force but instead lost an F-16 in the process to an inferior Mig-21 in the latest dogfight between two nuclear-armed neighbors which came nearly after 40 years from their last war. Upgraded Mig-21 known as ” Bis” snuck up and was positioned in a way by the ground operators that F-16 while busy trying to kill a Su-30 that it completely forgot about the small fish which chased one F-16 with an R-73 missile and went for the kill.

Su-30s are not only front line fighter jets of the Indian air force but also the poster child of the IAF and knocking one down will not only dent the morals of the rivals but also come as great propaganda for their own personals who were wary of the jet, this is the reason that F-16 pilots in recent dogfight largely focused on a Su-30 which was nearly 60km away from the pack of F-16s who tried for a kill using multiple rounds of long-range air to air missile. The Gun Carriage Factory recently handed over 5 of the 114 guns that the Army had ordered and Indian Army is already transporting them to Line of Control (LOC) to beef up Army capabilities at the border with the Pakistan. The Army will induct one complete Dhanush regiment, with 18 guns, by the end of this year and 155mm x 45mm artillery guns like Dhanush are increasingly required to supplement firepower provided by Bofors guns to retaliate against shelling by the Pakistan Army along the LoC in the current round of confrontation.

Dhanush has a hitting range of 11 km more than the original Bofors gun and is equipped with an inertial navigation-based sighting system, auto-laying facility, onboard ballistic computation and an advanced day and night direct firing system. Dhanush Weights less than 13 tonnes, with has a high ground clearance of 400 mm, ‘Dhanush’ is the “most maneuverable artillery system” and can be easily deployed in mountainous terrain. What could come as a major boost to the Indian Air Force and it’s Sukhoi-Su30MKI fleet, IAF is set to receive the first batch of Astra Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVR-AAM) from India’s state-owned missile maker Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) by end of this year, informed reliable industrial sources close to idrw.org. BDL last year received pre-induction orders for 50 Astra BVR-AAMs and with the help of 50 private and public sector industries involved in development and production of the different subsystems of the Air-to-Air missile, BDL is confident to start deliveries of the first batch by end of 2019.

DRDO along with IAF concluded nearly 13 rounds of trials in 2017-18 in multi-target engagements at different altitudes and combat scenarios before Astra BVR-AAM was cleared by the IAF for pre-production. DRDO had described trials as a combination of complex tests for engagement of unmanned targets in different modes of maneuvering, off-bore sight, at medium and long ranges. The missiles were telemeter-ed for evaluation of the online performance of all sub-systems, especially the data-link, RF seeker and proximity fuse for end-game performance. Continue reading

European weapons maker MBDA recently refused to allow integration of their Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) into India’s Russian origin Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jet, leaving India with very few choices now, to upgrade its Air-to-Air Missile arsenal for its front-line Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jet with the new bread of very long range air-to-air missile which can provide a credible edge over Pakistan after recent aerial dogfight where IAF had to rely on Short range R-73 Air to air missile to take down Pakistani F-16 after R-77 BVRAAM couldn’t be engaged due to lack of firing clearance from the missile system.

Controversial R-77 is still a highly modern and much-feared air to air missile system armed on almost all Russian origin fighter jets in Indian arsenal but missile system is also aging rapidly and IAF now is clearly favoring locally developed Astra air-to-air missile over R-77 but Astra can only act as a supplement to R-77 arsenal and actually doesn’t supersede its performance which is still limited with range of 75-90 km in head-on chase due to which DRDO has started development of Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) air to air missile program which will have Meteor missile long range performance in excess of 150km but that is still far from ready for production and might take nearly 5-7 years more to be cleared of all trials. IAF recently showed evidence in Radar Pictures of formation of 3 F-16 against one Mig-21 in aerial battle which took place in the month of February where a Mig-21Bis of Indian Air Force shot down a Pakistani F-16 before it was shot down by Second F-16 later both inside Pakistan occupied Kashmir. Phalcon airborne warning and control system (AWACS) A-50EI aircraft, was airborne when close to four F-16 breached LOC and nearly 24 Pakistani jets were in the vicinity when the operations were launched and the whole sequence of events was recorded by the powerful EL/W-2090 radar system developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Elta Electronics Industries of Israel.

In the first series of evidence showcased by IAF were the images shown above, IAF also claimed it has further evidence of voice interceptions on the ground and in the air which confirms that one aircraft presumably an F-16 was shot down and the event was recorded by Phalcon AWACS which have designed and developed by Israel which nearly operates 200 F-16s in its own fleet and have helped India build library of Radar signature of F-16 database, making it very difficult for Pakistani F-16 to go undetected over Indian airspace but that evidence was not enough for some armchair Pakistani defense analysts who were quick to dismiss them and instead came up with new theories which are even more bizarre than claims of captured Israeli Pilot and JF-17 taking down Su-30 Continue reading

It’s now a well-known fact that Tejas Mk1/LCA that has been over 35 years in the making is a woefully short of being able to be declared as combat ready fighter jet.  Its developers DRDO’s ADA/ADE still haven’t been able to deliver the perfect jet to the end user IAF. This has resulted in various versions; one is IOC version (20 jets are to be developed) and second is FOC version (20 jets are to be developed); all powered by GE 404 engine.

But these jets are still way of the mark, bcoz these jets wont/don’t have RWR or MAWS or OBOGS, which basically means these 40 jets will be sitting ducks in a hostile environment, and will be only suitable for flying only in friendly air space. This also means that these 40 jets are only suitable as LIFT (Lead In Fighter Trainer) or their trainer versions as SPORT (Supersonic Omni Role Trainer Aircraft). Continue reading
