Amid concerns over a string of deaths among Indian students in the US, a prominent community leader has said his organisation is dealing with at least one such tragic case a day and underscored the need for creating awareness among immigrants from India to ensure their safety.

“Not to exaggerate, but we deal with at least one death a day across the country and mostly among young students or H-1B employees who have recently immigrated” to the US from India, Mohan Nannapaneni, founder of volunteer-based nonprofit organisation TEAM Aid, told PTI in an interview on Wednesday.

Indian armed forces have earmarked funds to the tune of Rs 25,000 crore to meet its defence space requirements, ranging from building a constellation of surveillance satellites to secure communications networks, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan said on Wednesday.

Addressing the DefSat Conference and Expo organised by SIA-India, Gen Chauhan urged India’s private space sector to utilise this opportunity to make the country self-reliant in the emerging dual use-sector. Listing out the requirement of the armed forces, he urged the industry to partner in augmenting intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities by developing multi-sensor satellites, launch-on-demand services and a robust network of ground stations.

Aspiring Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley on Wednesday said that India wants to be a partner with the US, but as of now they don’t trust Americans to lead. The Indian-American presidential aspirant also said that New Delhi has played smart in the current global situation and stayed close with Russia. In an interview with Fox Business News, Haley, 51, said that as of now India sees the United States as weak.

“I have dealt with India too. I have got to say, I have dealt with India too. I have talked with (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi. India wants to be a partner with us. They don’t want to be a partner with Russia,” she said.

Two security personnel were killed and one injured in a gunfight between Naxalites and police in Jharkhand’s Chatra district on Wednesday, an official said. The incident took place at Bairio forest between Sadar and Basisthnagar Jori police station areas, around 200 km from Jharkhand capital Ranchi, the official added.

IG (operations) Amol V Homakar confirmed that two personnel were killed in the incident. The victims were identified as Sikandar Singh, a resident of Wazirganj in Gaya, and Sukan Ram, who hailed from Palamu in Jharkhand.

The NIA has filed a charge-sheet against five top leaders of the proscribed CPI (Maoist) in a case related to attempts by the outfit to revive its terror plans and agenda in various states of the country, an official said on Wednesday.

The charge-sheet against the accused was filed in the NIA Special Court in Ranchi in Jharkhand, a spokesperson of the federal agency said. The official said this is the first charge-sheet filed in the case relating to a criminal conspiracy by the proscribed organisation to expand, revive and propagate its violent ideology in Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and other states.

In the first targeted killing of the year, terrorists on Wednesday shot dead a worker from Punjab while another sustained injuries in Habba Kadal area of the city, officials said here. Amritpal Singh, a resident of Amritsar, was shot by the terrorists from point blank range and Shalla Kadal locality in Habba Kadal around 7 pm, the officials said. They said Singh died on the spot while another non-local worker identified as Rohit, aged 25, sustained injuries in the incident.

Rohit also hails from Amritsar. He was hit by the bullets in the abdomen and is undergoing treatment at SMHS hospital here.

The denial comes in response to recent reports, primarily in Western media, citing an anonymous Indian Air Force source. These reports alleged delays in Russia’s “large arms supply” to India due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and Western sanctions. Additionally, Ukrainian media outlets echoed similar claims regarding the supposed “disruption” of deliveries for the final two S-400 divisions and spare parts for Russian combat aircraft.
