Officials from SAAB, MBDA and Rosoboronexport will all be back in India later this month with their Mistral, RBS 70NG and Igla-S to conduct confirmatory trials in Pokhran for the Very Short Range Air Defence Systems (VSHORAD) tender to replace legacy Russian air defence systems in service.
Under VSHORAD tender, Indian Army and Indian Navy plans to procure 5,175 missiles and 1,276 single and multi-launchers worth over $5.2-billion with the transfer of technology to Indian Defence sector partner for local manufacturing in India.
Previous VSHORAD trials In India has seen performance issues with all three contenders, with Russian Igla-S scoring poorly in all previous trial around, among contenders. RBS 70NG required redesigned stand to meet Indian Army requirements and Mistral has other non-compliance issues.
In short VSHORAD tender under trials for last 5 years is still not able to meet all the requirements requested by Indian Army and chances of Cancellation of VSHORAD and then re-tendering is only fear which is keeping Indian Army going on for further trials.
