since 2011, 30 aircrafts have been upgraded and returned back to India which will allow aircraft to be operational for 15 more years. HAL under Transfer of Technology was supposed to upgrade aircrafts locally in India but due to conflict, local upgrades have suffered delays due to lack of transfer of up-gradation kit from Ukraine side to carry out local upgrades.
According to experts, Ukraine operates 6 to 10 An-26 aircrafts in its fleet and if India is not able to trace 5 aircrafts it is likely that it is been used by Ukrainian forces illegally and all-out effort should be made to trace and recover aircrafts .
