The Bihar Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested one of the prime suspects in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial bombings from Gaya. Taufiq Alam, who was wanted in the Ahmedabad bombings, had been evading arrest for the last 9 years. He was held by the ATS sleuths from a cyber cafe in Gaya. Alam’s two other associates have also been taken into custody.
Sources said Alam and his associates were nabbed from a cyber cafe when they were busy uploading incriminating posts on Facebook.
“We have arrested three persons. One of them – Taufiq Alam – is a prime accused in the Ahmedabad serial bombings. We have recovered incriminating documents from them. Various other investigating agencies are interrogating them,” said Gaya SSP Garima Malik.
HOW THE TERROR SUSPECTS WERE NABBED
According to sources, Taufiq and two of his associates, were sitting inside a cyber cafe in Rajendra Ashram area of Gaya town when the owner of the cafe recognized Taufiq based on the posters of wanted terror suspects put up in Gaya recently.
He immediately informed the local police which flung into action and picked him up along with his two associates from the cafe and took them to Civil Lines police station.
Taufiq was interrogated by the senior officials of the Bihar police and intelligence agencies at the police station. The Gaya police also informed the Gujarat police about the arrest. A team of the Gujarat Police is on its way to Gaya to take Alam on transit remand.
WAS TAUFIQ ALAM PLANNING ATTACK IN GAYA?
Taufiq Alam played a key role in the Ahmedabad bombings. Over 20 explosions rattled Ahmedabad on July 26, 2008, killing 56 people and injuring over 200.Alam’s arrest has come at a time when Gaya is hosting the annual 15-day Pitrapaksh fair. The police are interrogating him whether he was planning to execute any terror attack in Gaya during the fair which is attended by lakhs of people from across the country and world.
